Pomo Weavers Society

Preserving Tradition Through Community, Culture & Basketry

Pomo Weavers Society (PWS) was founded as a community-centered effort dedicated to preserving, teaching, and revitalizing traditional Pomo basket weaving and cultural knowledge. Rooted in respect for ancestors and future generations, PWS creates opportunities for Pomo people to learn traditional techniques, reconnect with gathering practices, and strengthen cultural identity through shared learning and collaboration.

Through mentorship, educational resources, cultural gatherings, and hands-on experiences, PWS encourages the continuation of weaving traditions while helping restore connections to the land, materials, and teachings that have sustained Pomo communities for generations.

Teaching & Mentorship

PWS provides opportunities for weavers of all experience levels to learn traditional weaving techniques, regalia making, basket materials, and cultural practices. Through demonstrations, shared knowledge, online lessons, and community support, members help one another grow while encouraging the next generation of weavers.

Gathering & Land Stewardship

Traditional basket weaving begins with the land. PWS organizes gathering and harvesting trips focused on identifying, collecting, and processing traditional basket materials while also helping restore and care for ancestral gathering sites. These efforts help preserve both ecological knowledge and cultural responsibility to the land.

Cultural Preservation & Research

PWS works to preserve traditional Pomo basketry knowledge through research, collaboration, museum visits, and the study of historic baskets and weaving techniques. Members believe these baskets are living cultural teachings meant to be appreciated, examined, and learned from—not simply displayed behind glass.

Community Engagement & Cultural Education

PWS participates in educational events, demonstrations, exhibits, and collaborative projects that help share the importance of Pomo basket weaving and Indigenous cultural knowledge with both Tribal communities and the public. Through these efforts, PWS continues working to ensure these traditions remain strong, visible, and thriving for future generations.
